Alonso wins inaugural Singapore GP Night Race!

Fernando Alonso took the inaugural win at the Singapore GP making up 14 places after suffering ‘rotten luck’ in qualifying Q2 yesterday to start 15th on the grid.  The win comes after almost exactly 12 months since his last win with McLaren in 2007.  Nico Rosberg took 2nd and Lewis Hamilton took 3rd to extend his championship lead over Felipe Massa who finished outside the points after a catastrophic pit stop blunder by Ferrari where the greenlight showed whilst the fuel rig was still fitted on.

Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest lap and looked good for a 4th place points finished, as usual the flying Finn over cooked it to literally fly offline into the barrier in the closing laps giving Ferarri nil point and very little to remember from the spectacular night race.

The turning point was the crash of Nelson Piquet Jr which played into the hands of Alonso and Rosberg (despite the latter’s Pits Stop penalty) and scuppered Ferrari and McLaren’s race.  Alonso went aggressive on the short first stint giving him a heavy fuel load for the 2nd stint giving him a wide window for any safety car deployments.  So I guess Alonso has Renault and Piquet to thank - he might be tempted to ask Piquet to play it again in the forthcoming races.
