Massa gets pole at Interlagos

In a highly dramatic Q3, Felipe Massa took 1st, with a surprising Jarno Trulli in 2nd.  Kimi Raikkonen made it to 3rd arguing that its better than being 2nd on the grid.  Lewis Hamilton qualified 4th with Heikki Kovailanen in 5th and Fernando Alonso in 6th.

Some Quotes:

“It’s fantastic to have taken a third consecutive pole on this track and it’s an incredible emotion to see everyone celebrating in the grandstands. I got a great lap on my first run in Q3 and I could have even not bothered to finish the second one, but you never know what might happen: I was the first to take the chequered flag and I would have looked stupid if someone had improved on my time.” Massa

“I know that some people are fighting for it, but I race for myself and I race for my team, I race for points as I have raced all my life,” said Trulli.  ”With my experience I know I don’t have to take too many risks, and if I go to the first corner on the inside line I wont’ give up, but if I am behind I won’t try a crazy attack.

“I think I did more or less what I was supposed to do,” said Raikkonen. “I am in a good starting place and I prefer to be third than second, it is a pretty good place to start.

“I haven’t approached this weekend any different to how I have approached any other weekend,” explained Hamilton. “We have come here to try and win.  Obviously today we showed good pace and the strategy we chose was perhaps not the best for qualifying. But today is not where you get the points, tomorrow is where you get the points. So we are in a strong position for tomorrow.

“I think we had a straightforward qualifying. My car felt good from the beginning of Q1 and the good balance and performance have been demonstrated by my overall fastest time in Q2. For sure, we’d rather be on the front row - however we’ll have to see which strategy the competition in front of us will have in the race. We feel confident about our strategy and should have a solid baseline for a good race tomorrow.” Kovailanen

“We thought that it would be very close and competitive this afternoon and we were not mistaken. We knew that it would be difficult to try and match the Ferraris and McLarens and so I think we have done our maximum this afternoon by qualifying in 6th place. I now hope that the strategy and the tyres work as expected so that we can have a strong race tomorrow.” Fernando Alonso
